Stranded Russian tourists to fly home soon - 03/02/2012

Russian tourists are queuing for check-ins

The southern province of Binh Thuan will do its utmost to return stranded Russian tourists to their homes as soon as possible, affirms a senior local official.

Le Tien Phuong, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, told VOV that Binh Thuan is working closely with the Russian Embassy and Russian Consulate General in Vietnam to provide daily necessities and accommodations for the Russian tourists who were left stranded in Vietnam.

As many as 270 Russian nationals on tour at resorts in Vietnam, including in Binh Thuan, unexpectedly found they could not fly home after their Moscow-based travel operator, Lanta Tur Voyage, announced its bankruptcy on January 27.

The provincial tourism agency is listing and contacting these Russian travellers who are visiting various resorts in Binh Thuan to assist them in returning, said Phuong.

“We are collaborating with the HCM City-based Russian Consulate General to meet their requests, first and foremost providing necessities and accommodations for them. For the time being, they can stay at resorts they had booked under contracts signed between Lanta Tur Voyage and Vietnamese travel operators,” said the top provincial administration leader.

“We are trying our best within our capacity to bring them home as soon as possible,” confirmed Phuong.

Relevant Russian agencies have worked with representatives from Vietnam Airlines, Aeroflot, S6 Airlines and Transaero Airlines to return these tourists back to their homes from now until February 10.

About 1,400 Russian tourists around the globe have been stranded a consequence of Lanta Tour Voyage’s bankruptcy.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on January 31 asked the Ministry of Sport, Tourism and Youth Policy to work with several banks to deal with the tour operator’s debt crisis.
